In Soviet times, this avenue was sometimes called Moscow’s Broadway. The street is a historic street and one of Russia’s oldest streets. During Soviet times, Khrushchev destroyed historic buildings and put up Soviet high rises. He was so impressed with American skyscrapers, he wanted a Moscow similarity. Many Moscuvites dubbed it a street of dentures because the buildings looked like teeth. Today it is still a popular street for tourists, artists, and is considered a hip place to live.
